The Clod and the Pabble

"Love seeketh not itself to please,

 Nor for itself hath any care,

 But for another gives its ease,

 And builds a Heaven in Hell's despair."

 So sung a little Clod of Clay

 Trodden with the cattle's feet,

 But a Pebble of the brook

 Warbled out these metres meet:

 "Love seeketh on-ly self to please,

 To bind another to its delight,

 Joys in another's loss of ease,

 And builds a Hell in Heaven's despite."

 

 

진흙과 자갈

사랑은 자신을 만족시키는 것이 아니다.

그것은 스스로 대해 걱정을 하지 않는다.

오히려 다른 사람을 위해 행복을 주고

지옥의 절망 속에서 천국을 세운다.

진흙 덩어리가 노래를 했다.

소발굽에 밣히며

그러나 개울의 자갈은

앞의 것과 반대의 노래를 했다.

사랑은 자신을 만족시키려 할 뿐이고

다른 이를 자신의 기쁨을 위해 묶어놓는다.

다른 사람이 행복을 잃어버릴 때 기뻐하며

하늘을 멸시하여 지옥을 세운다.
